Wisdom’s Paths Are Peace
Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding.
Context
In Proverbs 3, a father urges his son to trust the Lord, resist being wise in his own eyes, and welcome the Lord’s correction (Proverbs 3:5–12). He then calls the person who finds wisdom and gains understanding happy. He values wisdom above silver and gold and shows why it is worth pursuing. “And all her paths are peace” (Proverbs 3:17).
Connect
Knowledge is what we learn through instruction, experience, and observation. Understanding helps us see why what we’ve learned matters. Wisdom is the discernment to know how to respond. Proverbs 4:7 puts wisdom first while showing how much understanding matters. It calls wisdom “the principal thing” and adds, “And in all your getting, get understanding.” What we learn can come through many channels, but all wisdom ultimately comes from God (Proverbs 2:6).
Apply
We often associate age with wisdom. Why? Over the years, we see choices play out again and again. We learn what happened, begin to understand why, and use that insight to make better decisions. Those decisions can spare us needless trouble and give us peace of mind. There’s real value in that. But when we come to know God through Scripture and better understand HIS ways, we can ask Him for TRUE wisdom to walk in them (James 1:5). James describes that wisdom as “peaceable” (James 3:17). When God’s wisdom guides our choices, we can respond in ways that honor Him and walk in HIS peace… a peace that surpasses ALL understanding (Philippians 4:7).
