A Crown Across Generations

Children's children are the crown of old men, And the glory of children is their father.

Context

This proverb pictures the joy and honor shared across generations. Grandchildren are a crown to their grandparents, while parents are a source of honor to their children. Each generation has something to give and something to receive. Older generations have a responsibility to keep growing in spiritual wisdom, giving younger generations an example worth following and truth worth carrying forward.

2

Connect

Passing on God's truth is a rich biblical tradition. God instructed His people to teach His commands through everyday life (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). Each generation was to make His works known to the next so that children would set their hope in God and keep His commandments (Psalm 78:5-7). Older believers likewise model and teach godly living (Titus 2:1-8). As younger generations receive wisdom and grow in faith, older generations find joy and honor in seeing that faith take root and bear fruit.

3

Apply

Each generation has something to give and something to receive. Yet when godly principles are abandoned in today's society, disrespect replaces honor, self-interest weakens family commitment, and personal preference becomes the measure of right and wrong. Passing on God's wisdom - and humbly receiving it - helps guard against these influences. As older generations model faithful living and younger generations carry that faith forward, families grow stronger and the church is strengthened to advance God's kingdom.
