Contentment Through Christ

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)Read the whole chapter →

Context

Writing while imprisoned, Paul expressed gratitude for the Philippians’ support. But his contentment did not depend on what they provided. He had learned to live with abundance and need (Philippians 4:10–12). His declaration that he could “do all things” referred to Christ’s strength to face these changing circumstances. His confidence rested in Christ’s sustaining power.

Connect

Contentment rooted in Christ rests on faith in His sustaining power. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Such trust rests in God’s faithfulness and looks to Him for renewed strength to persevere (Isaiah 40:31). As concerns are brought to God in prayer with thanksgiving, His peace, which “surpasses all understanding,” guards hearts and minds through Christ (Philippians 4:6–7). Faith rests in Him, His peace guards the heart, and His strength sustains the steps - even while hardship remains.

Apply

We often quote this verse as assurance that Christ will help us achieve a personal goal, such as completing an ambitious project. But its assurance reaches into moments when plans unravel, provision feels uncertain, or answers are delayed. Through Christ, we can remain faithful and content without first receiving the outcome we desire. We can bring our concerns to God, depend on His strength, and press forward, trusting Him to sustain us through whatever comes.
