Faithful in the Waiting

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Context

God spoke these words to His people in Babylonian captivity, where their persistent disobedience had brought His judgment. Yet His correction did not cancel His care. He instructed them to build homes, plant gardens, raise families, and seek the city’s peace. False prophets encouraged them to doubt God’s word through Jeremiah, but His promise remained: after seventy years, He would restore them to their land. God remained just in judgment and faithful in His care.

Connect

God shows us that same justice, love, and faithfulness today. Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). He disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6) and sustains them through hardship (1 Peter 5:10). Just as false prophets undermined trust in Jeremiah’s message, Jesus warned that false prophets would deceive many (Matthew 24:11). Their deception cannot overturn His promise. As Israel awaited restoration, believers await Christ’s return to receive them to Himself (John 14:3).

Apply

We live amid sin’s consequences, yet God continues to care for us. We can nurture our families, serve others, and live purposefully while awaiting Christ’s return. When misleading voices invite doubt, we can hold firmly to His word. His promises give meaning to our waiting and confidence beyond our circumstances. The God who sustained His people in exile will sustain us until Christ returns.
